Handwriting Comparison

Handwriting is a complex learned motor behaviour, the development of which is influenced by a variety of conscious and subconscious factors. For each person, this development produces handwriting that is internally variable, as well as pictorially and structurally different to the writing of others.

Handwriting comparisons are conducted to determine, where possible, whether a person has, or has not, been responsible for completing a body of questioned writing.

Comparisons are reliant on a number of factors, including the supply of suitable and reliable specimen material against which the comparison can be made.

A detailed examination is conducted of the specimen and questioned handwriting to determine similarities and differences, after which the examiner, having taken account of the observations, expresses an opinion as to whether the writer of the specimen has, or has not, been responsible for completing the questioned writing.

Following an examination a range of opinions may be expressed, taking account of limitations that may occur as a result of the examination process.

Occasions where handwriting examination may be conducted include anonymous or threatening correspondence, application forms, financial documents including cheques, or critical entries in journals or diaries.
