| Latent (Hidden) Information |

Documents can contain information that is not visible, most likely unknown to the person who is creating that document.
This information can assist in determining the date or location of the document at a particular time, the relationship of one document to another, or whether entries are sequenced appropriately.
Latent information may exist as a result of:
- impressions in the paper, created when handwriting or signatures have been completed on a piece of paper above the one being examined, and have transferred an impression through;
- the inks that have been used to create entries on one document. Whilst ink may have a similar appearance to the eye, they can be very different when examined in detail;
- the document itself. Pages within a multi-page document may appear visually similar, however there may be a number of identifiable differences.
Using laboratory equipment, a detailed examination can enhance impressions, show inks are similar or not, or show inconsistencies in the way documents have been created.
Occasions where this type of examination may be conducted include anonymous or threatening correspondence, entries in journals or diaries, employment references, educational qualifications or financial records.
