Signature Examination and Comparison

Original signatures are an artefact of human movement and develop uniquely to each individual. A signature can provide authorisation or validation to a document. As with any aspect of human movement, a signature can be influenced by the natural effects of age, illness, or by external factors such as drugs, alcohol or injury. It is possible for these influences to greatly alter the appearance of a signature.

An examination can be undertaken of a signature to determine the sequence of strokes, degree of fluency, and whether there are indicators of disguise or simulation (copying).

Disguise in signatures can occur through the intentional alteration of some or all of the formation, usually to later disclaim ownership. Simulating the signature of another person is a regular occurrence and can be attempted in a number of ways including by freehand or tracing methods.

Naturally executed signatures, and those subject to disguise and simulation can leave minute features identified through a detailed microscopic examination.

Comparisons are conducted to determine, where possible, whether a person has, or has not, been responsible for completing a signature. Comparisons are reliant on a number of factors, including the supply of suitable and reliable specimen material to ensure an accurate understanding of the capability of the owner of the signature.

Following an examination and comparison a range of opinions may be expressed, taking account of limitations that may occur as a result of the examination process.

Occasions where this type of examination may be conducted include wills, cheques, receipts, application forms, or authorising persons on identity documents and educational qualifications.
